Allstate's California Customers in Line for Premium Credits, Refunds
Allstate Insurance will pay about $30 million in premium credits and refunds to thousands of California customers it overcharged, according to a settlement reached with the state Department of Insurance.
Insurance commissioner John Garamendi said the nation's second largest insurance carrier improperly used a customer's credit score to underwrite homeowner's policies, didn't always offer the best rate on existing homeowner policy renewals and didn't always offer multi-policy discounts to those with home and vehicle coverage.
Garamendi said Allstate violated state and internal insurance regulations.
The investigation looked at Allstate practices from January 1, 2000 through April 12, 2002.
