There's a free shuttle bus from the S.J. airport that goes to the light rail line, which is only a couple blocks away anyway so you could walk there if you're ambitious. (S.J. airport is small and walkable, although there's a lot of construction and new roadways that probably make it pedestrian-unfriendly.)
You could ride the light rail to downtown where there are lots of places to eat for lunch. Not nearly as many for dinner, and the ones that are open at dinner time tend to be the more expensive ones. Also downtown is the S.J. Museum of Art, which isn't much as art museums go, but it's free. Also downtown is the Tech Museum of Innovation which is reputed to be very good, but I've never been there. I think you could spend all day there if you're so included. Downtown S.J. is in the midst of a renaissance--some parts look kind of ratty, but it's safe.
I work downtown and might be able to meet for lunch (or even dinner--I may need to work late and would have to get dinner). But I have a meeting after lunch so I'll be on a fairly tight schedule.
Also tomorrow July 14, there's a free outdoor concert 5:30-9:00 pm downtown at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, which is right by the art museum and the Tech Museum. This week's concert is sponsored by a "rock/blues" radio station. The group is someone called "John Hiatt and the North Mississippi Allstars." The groups at these free concerts are not headliners that you're likely to know, but they tend to be decent.
I'll PM you some contact info. (Hope you're not a travelling axe murderer. :-) )
