This is weird--so many disasters in wealthy areas in CA of late...
First, the Anaheim Hills land slides. then the same thing in Laguna. Today there is a fire in Rancho Palos Verdes.

I heard that the AH and Laguna people were told NOT to build in those areas due to the unstable land.

Is this coincidence, just the time of year?

1. Is it more disasters
or is it more coverage of disasters? The media is doing a great job on covering suffering and disasters.

2. Good point, Beaver Tail.
I was irritated by all the coverage of the land slides in Anaheim Hills. While I felt badly to see anyone lose their home--it didn't affect the 'greater populace' so to speak. It only affected a small fraction of people...

4. You build in a fire zone, you're going to get burned out, sooner or later.
Same goes for earthquakes, floods, slides, etc. It's not
rocket science, it's ignorance.

5. During the Malibu land slides, a few residents

were asked if they would re-build. More people than I expected to, said something to the affect of, 'other than the having this kind of thing happen--you just can't beat the view!'

Is it the view of the ocean or being able to 'look down on others' that matters most to the people that build in these areas?

Either way, I'm with you in that it doesn't seem the wisest use of money.

9. what bugs me is when they bemoan the loss....

of ' all these multi million dollar homes '... usually those people are well-insured.

the media doesn't seem to care as much if a home in South LA burns down. now there is a BIG loss to those folks!

7. What about hurricanes?
Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 04:02 PM by Beaverhausen
Why so much sympathy for people on the east coast who keep losing homes to hurricanes but disdain for those out here on the west coast. Hurricanes are far more frequent than earthquakes, fires and landslides.

8. Places with good views are often geologically unstable
They're either on a steep slope or on top of a rapidly eroding cliff. That's the way things are in SoCal.
