Is Mission Viejo liberal or not?

Thought I read somewhere on this forum that it was not, but having a tough time finding it for some reason.

I feel your pain though. We frequently visit Orange County. I'm always surprised by the number of 'W' stickers we see on cars at Disneyland (cars w/local license plates and tags).

Orange county is what we used to call "The Orange Curtain" where Democrats just didn't get elected. It's slowly changing but Mission Viejo & Laguana Woods are home to a lot of wealthy older people who are very set in their way of thinking.

6. I am a refugee from Mission Viejo

More than 20 years ago I left Mission Viejo and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Escape from behind the Orange Curtain.

It was at that time, about 95% white (there was a significant Hispanic population, but after the landscaping jobs end at 5pm or so, they went to their homes.) It was (and probably still is), 60% + republican.

Recently it has been in the news because an unarmed Arab-American young man was shot and killed there by an off-duty Customs agent with the flimsiest of provocations. Bassim Chmait, may he rest in peace, killed in the hysteria of racism and hate pervading our country. He received no support from that community. See the story here

9. I recall that story--very disturbing!

I think I read it in the OC Weekly a while back. They were saying that STILL nothing was done about this, no arrests, etc. The story really made me angry to think this guy is just going to get away with this--like the lynchings many years ago in the south by the KKK. Very scary.

May mother's parents lived in Newport Beach while my father's parents lived in Mission Viejo/Laguna Woods. Both of them were pretty red though Newport Beach was less so. San Diego, where I live, used to be a very Republican town but now it's about 50/50 but even the Republicans tended to be pretty centrist (I.E. pro-choice but wanted lower taxes but only if the budget could be balanced) and many of them have voted for Democrats in recent elections. The richer coastal areas (La Jolla, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe) remain very red, young & hip coastal areas (think PB, OB, IB)are very blue and the suburbs are a toss up. If we could actually get the young people to turn up at voting booths then we'd win every election but the 20-somethings don't seem to want to be bothered.

I'm orignally from Orange County. The middle, particularly Santa Ana, and some pockets in Fullerton, Buena Park and Anaheim, are bluer these days.

diversity in Orange County in Buena Park and Anaheim. Wasn't sure if this affected the political demographics at all.

After the last election, I did find out there were DFA meetings in Anaheim and I think I recall one in Santa Ana--it was encouraging to see...

20. Teachers &thinking people are liberal. However there are some dummies

Most of the Republicans I run into in South County can be classified as dumb housewives. They have lots of money and are more interested in eating at an impressive restaurant than in anything happening in the world. A lot of these are moms. Hopefully, their kids are fixed in school. They come across as Stepford Wives except they are focused on showing their money. Most normal people in South County tend to be Democrats.

I know what you mean. I'm not at all fond of women like this. They live their lives through their children in some instances and for the most part are clueless and incredibly selfish.

You're right in that they are more concerned about how they, their homes, their children, their lives look to others than how much they effect the world around them.

For the most part. My dad lived in Laguna Hills, was a life long Repub... now he hates Bush with a purple passion. My sister lives in Laguna Hills... Dem through and through. A good friend of ours lives in Mission Viejo... DEM! No question. Maybe the Orange Curtain can be lost in a redecoration effort:)

...for as long as I remember, all those Stepford Christian, phony women. It reminds me of why I made that vow back in college that if I ever bought a house in OC, I'd never live beyond Costa Mesa.

But then again, I moved to Southeast Texas. The houses are cheaper here. :D
