On Saturday I attended the Red/Blue summit in Irvine, CA, sponsored by DFA. I had the opportunity to meet quite a few people, including the candidates running for the CA-48 open seat in Orange County vacated by Chris Cox' nomination to the SEC.

You'd never expect to meet a candidate that not only supports your exact policy positions, but states them eloquently and dynamically, with energy, enthusiasm and sincerity--and then talks to you personally for 20 minutes despite his busy schedule to hear your concerns and ideas.

But now I have met that candidate--and that candidate is Steve Young

Here is a quote when he first announced his candidacy:

Describing himself as a fiscal conservative with Democratic ideals, Young said he's angry that Congress recently cut medical benefits for veterans returning from the war in Iraq.

"I didn't think that people were being honest in the administration. When they couldn't tell us why we were going to Iraq, it really started to bother me," Young said. "We shouldn't be invading another country to establish democracy."

6. Steve Young is fine but it'll take to the second round to get a victory.

Statistically, no Democrat is going to win the first round because they are outnumbered. Steve is looking at a plurality and runooff.

I've heard that some over-zealous people are making some nasty calls to some of the other Democratic candidates. These people should cut it out. They are not helping Steve, and I'm sure he doesn't approve of this behavior. All the Democrasts in the race are nice people.

7. Steve just got the Party endorsement. 81%

He is a good solid candidate. Everyone, be nice to the other Democrats, who are staying in the race. They are really nice people. Steve's been campaigning for months and is a great speaker. I think he will do well and win. I think it will take two rounds though.

Democrats pick their man

The party's California officials vote to endorse attorney Steve Young in the race to fill former Rep. Chris Cox's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressional candidate Steve Young secured the endorsement of state Democratic Party officials Wednesday, but he'll still have to vie with three other Democrats on Oct. 4 to replace former Rep. Chris Cox. Of the 39 people who voted Wednesday, 30 selected Young for the endorsement.

Young, 51, a Newport Beach attorney, prevailed over retired teacher Bea Foster, 67, of North Tustin; UC Irvine business professor John Graham, 58, of Irvine; and marketing consultant Tom Pallow, 41, of Tustin. How much the endorsement means is up in the air. The conventional wisdom is that a Democrat stands little chance of winning even an open seat in the 48th Congressional District. Cox, a Republican, held the seat easily since first winning it in 1988.

With that in mind, some Democratic voters have said they'll consider supporting Republican Marilyn Brewer, who paints herself as fiscally conservative but socially moderate, supporting abortion rights and stem cell research, for example.

Two candidates for the 48th Congressional District seat -- American Independent Party candidate Jim Gilchrist and Republican Edward Suppe -- won't have professions listed after their names on the Oct. 4 primary election ballot. Both candidates asked for designations that the Secretary of State said didn't comply with state law, and neither candidate submitted a new designation that met requirements by a Monday deadline, Secretary of State spokeswoman Nghia Nguyen said.

Suppe, who has served in the Coast Guard, wanted to be listed as a veteran. Gilchrist wanted some mention of the Minuteman Project, which he founded, on the ballot by his name. An attorney for Gilchrist on Tuesday filed a court challenge to the Secretary of State's decision, Gilchrist campaign manager Howie Morgan said.

9. We have been sending volunteers to work for him.

If he can net 51% in the primary, then there will be no followingt vote. He will have won.

If it looks like he is likely to be the front-running Dem, and if the other Dem groups are endorsing him, then for Heaven's sake, vote for Steve young. We need to get as many Dems as possible. Strategy is the key here.

10. The numbers don't add up. Keep helping him through the final election.

There are more Republicans than Democrats. Even if the Republicans split their votes, together they'll total more than 51%.

In the second election, Steve only needs a plurality. That's easier than a majority.

After our near victory in OH-02 (the fourth most Republican district in America), there is no district where we can't win. YOU MUST BELIEVE.

Steve Young has been endorsed by the California State Democratic Party, the Orange County Young Democrats and many others. Right now he's got the big MO!

12. I do. But I see it taking until the second round to determine a winner

I don't see how it is possible for a Democrat to grab the seat in the first election because the Republicans will all be out voting for their respective choices. In the second round, Steve should win.

If we win this election, it will only strengthen our hand for the 2006 elections, here's why:

Everybody knows we want a 50-state strategy. Everyone knows we want to challenge 100 incumbent Republicans in 2006. But the pricks in DC want to go back to the same old targetting strategy which has lost us 6 straight congressional elections. If we win this, especially after how well we did in OH-02, we will have all the momentum and the moral high ground over the DC Loser Club (DLC) in Washington.

16. I was there, and REALLY impressed by Young

I spoke for awhile with his Staffers, who I knew from the Ohio race of Paul Hackett. Young's got some great mojo going there.
