Base closing commission keeps open Monterey military schools
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/08/25/state/n061501D53.DTL

The federal base closing commission voted Thursday to keep open two key Monterey, Calif., military facilities — the Defense Language Institute and the Naval Postgraduate School.

The commission also voted unanimously to establish a new governing board to coordinate education programs between the Naval Postgraduate School and a military school in Ohio, the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

The decision by the nine-member Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission modifies a Pentagon recommendation to maintain the Monterey schools unchanged.

1. DLI goes one and off the list on a egular basis.
The accountants hate DLI for the same reason they hated Fort Ord namely the high COLA and BAH payments required to station people there while everyone else recognizes them as unique facilities which do a hell of a job. Beautiful facilities too with nice ocean views. No doubt developers would cream their pants at the tought of redeveloping it into an exclusive neighborhood of track homes charging millions for each one. Currently a very large percentage of DLI's grounds are green belt and open space. Enviromentally & economically I'd rather keep it with students learning foreign languages instead of summer retreats for millionares.

3. Unbelievable...
they took Fort Ord away from Monterey- and now they want to do away with the DLI and NPGS?? Those are pretty successful from what I hear.

I grew up in Monterey and was pissed when Fort Ord closed- lots of good people leaving and the like.
