Senate Votes to Ban Body Piercing Without Parental Consent
The state Senate voted unanimously Tuesday to ban minors from getting body piercings without parental consent.
Assembly Bill 646, proposed by Assemblywoman Sharon Runner, R-Lancaster, would make it an infraction, punishable by a fine of up to $250 for anyone to pierce a minor who does not have the permission of a parent or guardian. Ear piercing, however, is exempt.
Proponents of the bill say that the current phenomenon of piercing various body parts can lead to serious health risks to minors because piercing is a procedure that can easily lead to infection. They say that it should be up to adults to decide whether or not their children should undergo such invasive procedures.
The bill passed by a vote of 35-0.
