A plug for my employer - Whole Foods Market
From our president, John Mackey:

"We are working to identify the immediate and long-term needs of our team members impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Our efforts thus far include the establishment of a special internal relief fund supported by donations from fellow team members and a guaranteed job at another store location," said John Mackey, Whole Foods Market chairman and CEO. "In addition, our stores across the country have made it easy for shoppers wishing to support the relief efforts to simply add a donation to their purchase which will go directly to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. We will make a matching donation for in-store customer donations up to a total of $1 million."

I'm sure other grocers and retailers are stepping up to the plate, but I just wanted to let people know about this. We've also put together 1000 bags of supplies to go to NOLA.

1. Thank you so much! I do much of my shopping at Whole Foods!
They rock!

:headbang:

Thank you for sharing this. It's nice to know that I can donate additional funds through them when I shop.

You work for a wonderful company!

2. Another reminder why I shop there.
Although we all jokingly call it "Whole Paycheck" my friends and I spend much of our grocery $$ there because it just seems like a better place all around. Sure, some products cost more, but the quality of everything fresh is the best of any supermarket, the staff don't have that harried beaten down look they assume at some national chains, and there's always some cause at the register... a pretty painless way to contribute even a small amount. I like the bag tokens (rather than taking the five cent credit for bringing in our own bag, we can add the nickel to a fund jar.)

I'm sure that working for them you see their warts, but it's a pretty good company.

:)

3. Whole Foods is Union Buster
Whole Foods is considered one of the worst anti-union companies in the country, with a record of firing workers who demand a union. See here and here and here.

For more see here, a site of workers seeking to organize Whole Foods around the country.
