Feinstein backs Angelides for California governor
Associated Press

SACRAMENTO - U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein will back state Treasurer Phil Angelides for governor in 2006, his campaign announced Tuesday.

Angelides, one of two Democrats to formally announce a run for the Democratic nomination, already has endorsements from Sen. Barbara Boxer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Feinstein will join those two as a co-chairwoman of the campaign, his campaign said.

"Phil Angelides has the intelligence, the drive and the ability to put California back on the right track," Feinstein said. "Whether it is education, public safety, health care or transportation, Phil Angelides is committed to once again making California the leading state in the nation."

Angelides has been state treasurer since 1999.

1. despite that, I'm still voting for him
and she also endorsed Jackie Speier, whom I'm also voting for

With those two at the top of the ticket, I think we'll take back the governor's office for sure.

Hell, we could run one of my cats and they would give Ahnuld a good race at this point in time.

2. I don't see Arnie making a real recovery and Phil...
is the fighter that the Dems have longed for. Phil will work hard and we will too, to make sure that DAS GOP is locked out of Sacremento.

3. I don't know anything about this guy.
If he's not a total limpwristed wanker then he should be able to beat Arnold since Arnie's poll numbers are in the 30's right now. Still, I hope he isn't another Gray Davis type and if the election isn't close then I'll likely vote Green just to give them one extra vote.

4. From what I've learned
About primary politics, Angelides has basically thrown down the gauntlet on this primary. Because candidates are usually similar ideologically primaries are generally decides by endorsements, fundraising ability, and electability. Now that Angelides has the 3 most powerful Dems in Cali behind him, he's pretty much got the nomination locked down.

7. I support Phil ... and Barbara Boxer's recommendation is the pertinent one
I signed Phil's petition encouraging Gov. Rovebot to sign AB 849 (Same-sex marriage legalization bill).

9. Yes, I did too...
though he's been going back on his word on everything. He said he would support same sex marriage before he got in office--he also said he would protect choice...

We'll see on both issues...

I was SO very impressed that he put up that petition
it still takes a lot of guts to support same sex marriage

but like someone said, he has the support of the three top California federal leaders

not sure if he has the support of the mayors of LA and San Francisco

I would think that Newsome would endorse him as would most of the northern California party leaders

13. Race would be tight.
No one seems to know who Angelides is and that doesn't surprise me since the name didn't ring any bells for me before reading this thread and I follow politics much more then the average voter. Right now even with the Governor being very unpopular he's still only three points behind Angelides which is very worrying news.

Imagine after the Republicans have gotten their smear machine working on him for a while how that will effect his poll numbers. They've just got to move the numbers 4 points to reelect Schewarzeneger. It's to bad we can't get someone with more big name appeal.
