Jerry McNerney declares for the Democratic nomination for the United States Congress in California's 11th District
TRACY, CALIFORNIA, OCTOBER 12, 2005 -- Jerry McNerney today announced that he is running for the Democratic Party nomination for the United States Congress in California's 11th District in 2006. Over 100,000 voters chose McNerney over incumbent Republican Richard Pombo in 2004. McNerney has now assembled a large grassroots volunteer campaign including activists from Democratic Clubs in San Joaquin, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Morgan Hill as well as volunteers from outside the district.
Defining his position McNerney said "We need to step up to the plate and invest in America much as our parents and grandparents did so we too can hand down a nation to our children and grandchildren that is secure and prosperous. We can do this by investing in education, by promoting clean energy innovation and conservation, and by providing affordable healthcare for all Americans. The best thing we in this district can do to secure the air we breaths and the water we drink is to unseat Richard Pombo."
Commenting on conditions in the district, McNerney listed "congested and decaying highways, levees that have recently failed and more that are about to fail, air pollution that is among the worst in the nation, unemployment that is twice the state average, and an educational system that needs serious attention."
When asked about the Republican incumbent Richard Pombo, McNerney answered "He is one of the most powerful men in Congress but this district has been badly neglected. Richard Pombo is not only ineffective but he's seriously corrupt and his corruption hurts us and the nation."
Rallying his supporters McNerney went on "Because of Pombo's actions every day more voters in the district join the McNerney Campaign. We will be victorious in both the June 2006 primary and the November 2006 election, and Richard Pombo will be defeated. That is why I am running for the US Congress in the 11 th District. Thank you! I pledge to work hard as your Congressman, not
only for you but for all our fellow Americans and the future for our children."
Pleasanton residents Jerry McNerney and wife Mary have three children, all graduates of UC Davis. Dr. McNerney is a noted clean energy technology expert. He decided to run for congress after a 2004 telephone conversation with his son in the USAF discussing why there was not a
Democratic challenger to Richard Pombo. With only grassroots support in 2004 McNerney assembled a campaign. After the election his supporters refused to give up on unseating
Congressman Pombo. Today the Congressman is weaker than ever before, he no longer flies under the radar of public scrutiny, his poll numbers are down, and the number of voters who are angry with him and his policies are growing with each new headline. McNerney and his supporters are confident that this race can be won.
