San Francisco soft landing for rescued dogs and cats
Left at a shelter in Houston, they'll be up for adoption

One of San Francisco's newest immigrants -- a brindle boxer-hound mix -- was so eager to get off the plane from Houston that she bolted from her kennel so she could greet the Continental Airlines ground crew when they opened the cargo door.
The 3-year-old dog, who was quickly put on a leash, was one of the "Hurricane Rita" pets -- 45 dogs and 24 cats -- who arrived Thursday at San Francisco International Airport, ready to begin new lives in the Bay Area.

McLaughlin, a real estate developer in Tiburon and Belvedere who has organized 14 charter flights for cats and dogs rescued from hurricane zones in recent weeks, airlifting 1,400 so far, extended his hand to pet the dog. The dog slurped his palm.
"You're in a much better place now, kid," he said, petting him.
McLaughlin said the animals had been abandoned, left alone in a shelter south of Houston for three days without food or water before they were rescued by the Houston Humane Society. McLaughlin, who raises money from private donors for the flights, declined to say how much they cost.
