And loving every moment.

When I leave here, I will be in a horizontal mode.

edited to add: I have the best view in town.

Angel Island to my left, Corinthian and the Golden Gate Bridge to my right, and one of the coolest places on the planet (San Francisco) at eye-level, six and one half miles across the Bay.

and Saigon, Vietnam. I am living most of the time for the last two years right in the center of Ho Chi Minh City. The balance, about 3 to 4 months a year, on my farm right outside Cotati where I have lived for almost 40 years.

Even though Sonoma County is one of the premier places to live in the whole world I just can't stand being there very much, or often, these days.

I even skipped BURNING MAN this year because I am enjoying being here so much more than being in Amerikkka under the current fascist regime.

I love my native country but hate the mentality of most of my fellow citizens.

They couldn't realistically be much more ignorant, hateful or unhealthy in every way.

At least I hope not...

93. I guess I have difficulty in understanding
the reason anyone would purposely move to a place and then bitch about it. It's like moving to Italy and complaining that no one speaks English.

Fresno has an undeservedly bad rep. It started with Johnny Carson and is currently known on DU as "home of Free Republic." (Apparently ONLY people from Fresno belong to FR.):eyes:

There's a lot of great things about this area. What do you like? Music? I can give you 50 venues offering up every kind of music you can imagine. Art? We have tons of art galleries here, not to mention numerous museums. The Art Hop is the last Thursday of every month. We have a thriving gay community. We have an active progressive community. We have an extremely diverse population which, among other things, makes for wonderful restaurant choices (try the Mediterranean on Fresno & Gettysburg - GREAT Lebanese food). Do you like to camp? I can guide you to the places the "touristas" don't even know exist -- no fees and GREAT campsites.

My apologies for the Bay Area comment. It was unfair. For the record, the Bay Areans are usually the worst at looking down their noses at our community. Funny that they're moving here in droves, though.

Look, if you're bored and don't know what to do, PM me, tell me what you like to do and I'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

94. My family lives mostly in places in the South....
which I don't like much. They love it. I may move back one day because it's inexpensive and my family's there. I'll probably talk too much about how much I love California. They'll probably get annoyed and use the old "fruits and nuts" line. No worries, this Kentucky-born boy will continue to assert that I've been a life-long native California since 1994, and tell the story of being born on a surfboard.

I'm not a big fan of Fresno, though I have limited experience of it, and most folks I know who've lived nearby (mostly Navy families) don't like it much (to be honest, the whole San Joaquin leaves me unimpressed...guess I'm a coast, mountains, and desert guy). But your love of it makes me think I should take a second look from your perspective. Thank you.

We'll never all like the same things, and we probably shouldn't get too offended when people disagree with our tastes.

96. It's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with my tastes.
It's a matter of geographical snobbery. It's not just about Fresno. It's not just about the San Joaquin Valley. It's about the South. It's about rural living in general. It's about being dismissive of entire regions AND, more importantly, being dismissive, or worse, condescending, of the people who choose to live there.

There are reasons Republicans have such a strong foothold here in the Valley and one of those reasons is that Republicans don't feel that visiting this area, or rural communities in general, is beneath them. Calling a place "Fresneck" is not winning friends and influencing people. Referring to all 250,000 of us as "Freepers" does not gain one Democratic vote.

Now, I've hijacked this thread WAY more than I intended. My apologies to the OP.

97. I know that not every person from Fresno is a Freeper
And I'm sorry if I ever implied such a thing. I have met some wonderful progressive people since I've been here. Sort of a side note: on two different crosswalk buttons that I pass while walking to the store, someone was kind enough to alter the sign with a magic marker...instead of reading "Push Button for Signal" the sign now reads "FUCK Bush for Signal". It gives me hope and makes me smile each time I pass it.

It's just seems to me that the ratio here is 3:1 (3 knuckledraggers for every 1 progressive). Of course that is only based on my own observations of the people I've been lucky enough (or unlucky enough, in too many cases) to encounter. I've met people here who have flat out told me they would NEVER vote Dem, regardless of how pathetic the Repukes are.

The "bitching" on my part mainly comes from the fact that I can't even keep my windows open at home without overhearing my downstairs neighbors ranting loudly and irrationally (at all hours) about hippies, liberals, the UN, the ACLU and a variety of other topics (why these ranting, angry young men aren't in Iraq is a mystery that has yet to be solved).

But I consider Monterey my home county. I moved up here (where I spent most of my childhood and young adult years) to take care of my elderly mom. I still have a cheap little studio in Monterey that I stay in when I make a short visit to Monterey.

I also lived in Santa Clara County---where I attended college---and San Francisco, which I truly loved.

in some ways it is sort of like the "59th county": traffic, sprawl, etc., but that isn't the point: as of the first of next month the correct answer will be "Santa Clara". Years ago I also lived in SF and then Alameda (Oakland). :hi:

252. Came to the states at 10, grew up in San Joaquin County
- Lodi, lived in San Francisco and now live in Solano County. There are some very beautiful things about Solano County, unfortunately the negatives seem to hold a higher ground at times.

259. Yep Proud Patriot LOL!
I heard they have a more active democrat club now. Dunno I was driving around Stockton today and it's all so strange to me. I can't remember much of it from back in the day.
