You're an Oaklander if...
http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/media/Oakland-Magazine/January-February-2007/Youre-an-Oaklander-If-/index.php

Even though I haven't lived in Oakland in 16 years, apparently I AM and will ALWAYS BE an Oaklander! :bounce:

(Even if I wasn't born on Pill Hill, but rather the old Kaiser at MacArthur/Broadway.)

(One of my favorite stories from when I was little: My mom and I were coming back from my preschool near Mills, and I asked my mom if we could go to the grocery store on the way home. She asked "Why?" and I said I would like to get some cauliflower. She obligingly took the next exit to go to a grocery store on the way home. I said, "No, I don't want to go to that grocery store." She asked what grocery store I was hoping to go to. I said, "I want to go to the one near the Merritt Bakery." She said why. I said, "I was hoping after we got the cauliflower we could go get a cake." :P )

4. I was born on Pill Hill, Providence Hospital
I've done most of the things on that there list. they've left out a couple of important items. If you still call it Capwell's rather than Sears, if you remember Swans basement or Henderson Surplus ( extra points if you can name the movie the storefront appears in). the new Genoa deli sucks and I miss Luca and the old Genoa store. If you went to Bertolas because of the food rather than the very cheap drinks...lots of stuff to make one an Oaklander.

6. My great grandmother worked for Capwells.
I have all of her little bracelets that they gave her for each significant anniversary of her hire date.

10. Capwells morphed into the Emporium, I believe...

And Lucca has two "c"s, as I remember.

I grew up near the Claremont Hotel, graduated Berkeley HS '64, my mother taught at Mills and ran the nursery/pre-school program there.

We had a fabulous view of the Bay and GG Bridges from our home but the air quality was so horrible that they were often too obscured by smog to be seen.

Went to Bertola's many times for the cheap, good food when I was very young and on my own, I didn't drink. It was located near where Telegraph and Shattuck merged.

I loved to go to Botts Ice Cream on College Ave., near Ashby, and Dreyer's Ice Cream further down College in Oakland, near Chabot Road.

Lake Temescal and Children's Playland on Lake Merritt were fun destinations as a child.

The Food Mill Natural Foodsm located way out on McArthur Blvd, was the first health food store I saw...

The obscure little town of "Canyon", between Oakland and Moraga was a trip.

Frank Yuell Field for the early Raiders(Traitors) games.

Oak Knoll Naval Hospital where my little sniveling siblings came from.

And one died there of Leukemia, also in 1964...

The PX and Commissary at the Oakland Army Terminal utilized weekly to provision our large family.

The double-decker section of the "Nimitz" freeway.

A few of my favorite/familiar places once in, or near, Oakland.

8. I knew Frank Youell Field
We drove past it a few times en route to Parts North before 680 existed. I remember looking at it and thinking, "This is where a pro team plays?"
