FORMALDEHYDE IN FABRICS AT JOANN'S PROP 65 WARNING
Edited on Fri Jul-31-09 07:47 PM by KakistocracyHater
I just went out to my local Joann Fabrics store & I was horrified to see little signs, about 3" by 5" white signs put at the end of several aisles. These fabrics are all made in either China or India nowadays-but formaldehyde?! A "KNOWN CARCINOGEN" banned from nail polishes, now in fabrics & clothing everywhere. I say this on the assumption that because fabrics woven in China are poisonous(poison wedding dress/Hitchcock anyone?)the ready-made clothes made in China also are highly likely to have the same contaminated fabrics.

I think it's prop 65? Found it: http://oehha.ca.gov/Prop65/background/p65plain.html

..."What Is Proposition 65?

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address their growing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative became the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known by its original name of Proposition 65. Proposition 65 requires the State to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include approximately 775 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. By providing this information, Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about protecting themselves from exposure to these chemicals. Proposition 65 also prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water."...

..."TITLE 11-DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
DIVISION 4-PROPOSITION 65 PRIVATE ENFORCEMENT
FINAL REGULATION
CHAPTER 1

§ 3000. Authority.

This chapter sets forth procedures necessary to comply with Health and Safety Code section 25249.7(e) and (f) as amended by Ch.599, statutes of 1999 and Chapter 578, statutes of 2001. Any private person proceeding "in the public interest" pursuant to Health and Safety Code § 25249.7(d) or bringing any other action (hereinafter "Private Enforcer"), who alleges the existence of violations of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Health and Safety Code sections 25249.5 or 25249.6) (hereinafter "Proposition 65"), shall comply with the applicable requirements of this chapter.

Note: Authority cited: Section 25249.7(f), Health and Safety Code. Reference: Sections 25249.7(e) and 25249.7(f), Health and Safety Code."...

1. certain children are sensitive to tags at the back of the neck in clothes
I think this will just add to it. From nasal strips to asthma to 'sensitive' groups affected by air quality this only seems to be a growing trend. Leather furniture recently made Europeans get rashes, etc.-Made In China sofas. They are using poisonous materials & it's ubiquitous, I guess I need to find organic fabrics now.

2. Fabrics have had that in them for a long time. It is to prevent bugs.
from eating them...It used to be worse. I remember going into a fabric warehouse years back and my eyes watering and throught burning from the chemicals in the air.
