Let us register as organ donors as we register our autos-

Only 23 percent of Californians choose to become organ and tissue donors, far below the 58 percent achieved in states that rank near the top. Good news could be on the way for those waiting for transplants.

A bill pending on Gov. Schwarzenegger's desk would give Californians an annual opportunity to become organ and tissue donors when they renew their vehicle registration online.

More than 100,000 people, including 21,000 Californians, are waiting for a transplant. Tragically, about 18 people die each day because a donated organ was not available in time.

A close friend of mine was killed in a car accident, but he was a donor and saved quite a few lives with his organs. And now his sister works for the transplant committee as...a spokesperson, I believe. So, I became an organ donor when I got a new license.
