Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s spending on Proposition 16 has hit $44 million!
Edited on Tue May-25-10 12:26 PM by Ernesto
"The amount is far above the $35 million that the utility originally budgeted for the campaign.
Proposition 16 was placed on the ballot by PG&E to make it more difficult for local governments to form municipal utilities."

5. Sac Bee opinion
1. Proposition 16 – This is nothing less than an attempt by Pacific Gas and Electric to lock its monopoly status into the state constitution. Public power agencies would face an incredibly high bar – a two-thirds vote – to expand service and offer cheaper rates to businesses and other customers in PG&E territory. If this initiative passes, it will affirm that would-be monopolies can use their wealth to effectively buy an election. Other corporations are watching and will be close behind them.
