New Field Poll shows voters pulling back from pot legalization

Proposition 19 is supported by Democrats 51 percent to 39 percent, and among 18-39 year-old voters, 54 percent to 38 percent. Geographically, its greatest strength comes from the north with the San Francisco Bay area in favor 49 percent to 40 percent, while the rest of Northern California is behind it 50 percent to 46 percent.

Republicans are opposed, 65 percent to 25 percent. Half of all Southern California voters are against the measure as are 56 percent in the Central Valley. People 65 and older are opposed by 34 points.
The measure trails 56 percent to 40 percent among those respondents who said they had already voted by mail,

“That’s pretty ominous,” said Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo. “It’s going to have a tough time.”
DiCamillo said federal insistence that it would still prosecute people who possess and sell marijuana if Proposition 19 passes may have dampened early enthusiasm.

“At some point voters might be thinking you can’t go it alone,” he said.

I think we need to keep in mind that field polling is done via land line phones not cell phones.
This sways these polls in favor of the older voter although the older voter is traditionally who shows up to vote.

We will see. Should be interesting.

2. I expect this measure to fail by 5 to 10 percent. . .

and neither "old people" nor Republicans will bear the brunt of opposition -- the postmortem, I believe, will find those who opposed it quite diverse and the spectrum of opposition to have cut across all demographics.
