Astronaut Jose Hernandez announced his candidacy for Congress in Modesto on Tuesday. Hernandez, who was born in French Camp and calls Stockton home, is the first generation citizen son of Mexican migrant farmworkers who became a local hero when he rose through the ranks to become a NASA astronaut, serving as a mission specialist on the shuttle Discovery a few years ago. This guy spent his childhood picking vegetables in the fields alongside his migrant farmworker parents, and pursued his dreams to become a medical gear designer at Lawrence Livermore and fly through space as an astronaut.
He will be running against Republican Jeff Denham, the current Congressional Representative from CA-19, a farmer, and owner of a petro-plastics company.
Whether or not you're in the district, please show your support for Jose Hernandez! Lets kick a Republican out of Congress, send a real American hero to Washington, and show the world that the Central Valley isn't an impenetrable Republican stronghold full of freepers and tea partiers!
