LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger hopes to raise at least $50 million from donors around the country to fund his ambitious campaign to overhaul California government, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
The popular GOP governor has proposed constitutional amendments to change how the state draws its legislative districts, compensates its workers and spends taxes. He has threatened to put his program before the voters as initiatives unless two-thirds of lawmakers agree to place it on a special election ballot later this year.
Schwarzenegger said he would enlist donors outside California to support a campaign that could include multiple ballot propositions and a television advertising blitz.
"We all know the issues we are addressing are not just state issues, that the rest of the country is looking at California and as California goes, so goes the rest of the nation," he told the Times.
