Donors give only $250 to Shelley's legal defense fund
JIM WASSERMAN, Associated Press Writer

Monday, January 31, 2005

(01-31) 16:51 PST SACRAMENTO (AP) --

As Secretary of State Kevin Shelley struggles to keep his job, he's received only a single $250 contribution to his three-month-old legal defense fund, which he also lent $100,000 from money borrowed against his San Francisco home.

The embattled state elections official has likewise received only $28,000 in campaign cash since his mounting legal troubles began last August, and none since the new year opened, according to campaign contribution reports released Monday.

Aides said Shelley is too busy defending himself and running his office to raise money.

1. Democrats demand ethics from government officials.
We should be proud of that. The sad thing is that Schwarzenegger will probably replace Shelley with a Republican twice as corrupt, and we will have to hope we find out what he is up to in time to kick him out.

4. The REPS want to replace Shelly with a Ken Blackwell type.

Shelly is the Secretary of State here. He sued Diebold and made them get rid of touchscreen voting machines in California. Now Congressional Republicans are investigating him and have even turned him over to the FBI. Schwarzenegger is also siccing various state agencies on him, too.

The most "serious" charge is that he was slow to implement the Help America Vote Act to bring technology into California's elections. Ummm...seems to me Shelly is a hero for keeping out the Diebold technology! But of course the GOP has him in its crosshairs.

There are additional charges, probably trumped up, alleging that he paid a consultant who did some campaign work to also do work on elections, or some such thing. Oh yeah, they also say he yells at his staff.

If Shelly is forced out of office or resigns, Schwarzenegger gets to appoint a Republican--just like Katherine Harris or Kenneth Blackwell. If that happens, the GOP appointee could buy riggable voting machines, stonewall recounts, figure out ways to toss DEM registrations and absentee ballots, and otherwise screw up our elections--just like Florida and Ohio.

The DNC should be standing behind Shelly on this one--and opening up their pockets.

3. From the tone of this article, I'd say Shelly is being Grey Davis-ized
You know, prosicuted by the press. I remember about a year or so before Grey Davis started having problems, there was a lot of bad press about him, and it was all the vaguly damning stuff that couldn't be refuted. Like that he was boring, a wonk, dull, had ambition, etc.

Sorry to see this happen to Shelly. I don't know the nature of these charges against him, or if any charges have been brought yet. But I think it's a witch hunt.

5. Shelley decertified Diebold in CA and then the fun ensued.

He's being chased out of office. And when he's gone, good bye to voting in California.

Yeah, Democrats should be proud of supporting witch hunts that will come back to hand the vote to the machines of the other side.

7. I can't find anything on it.
I did a google search real quick, and the only story I found was from the LA Times, and that link was no longer working.

No wonder he hasn't raised any money.

8. I just e-mailed the Patrick Henry Democratic Club.
They were circulating a resolution asking other clubs to urge the Democratic Party to support Shelley.

Maybe they'll want to head up a fundraising drive, too.

I also left a voice mail message on the media contact's phone at the Secretary of State's office, and asked for contact info on Shelley's Legal Defense Fund for a possible article, since I'm a freelance journalist.

If I hear back, I'll let you know.
