Schwarzenegger ready to top last year's fund-raising record

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger raised more than $33 million in 2004 but has less than $2 million left as he gears up for a likely special election this year in which he once again appears ready to gather millions of campaign dollars.

Schwarzenegger's record-setting fund-raising pace, reported in year-end campaign finance statements filed with the state Monday, helped achieve ballot- box victories last March and November. The governor controlled six different committees designed to raise money in 2004; he used the cash mostly for television commercials and glossy mailers.
