DENVER — Democrats chose their highest-elected statewide leader Tuesday to vie for the state's U.S. Senate seat — considered pivotal nationally — in November's general election.
Unofficial results from the Democratic primary showed Attorney General Ken Salazar handily defeated Colorado Springs-area educator Mike Miles with 74 percent of the vote with 87 percent of precincts counted as of 11:30 p.m.
Salazar — surrounded by his wife, daughters and extended family — blew kisses and gave repeated thumbs-up to his cheering supporters gathered for his victory speech at Bogey's on the Park in Denver.
"Thanks from the very bottom of my heart for believing in an America of hope, and opportunity and progress for all people," Salazar said.
Miles, who campaigned for 2 1/2 years but raised only about one-tenth as much money as Salazar, didn't concede defeat but addressed his supporters late Tuesday at the Walnut Foundry Event Center in Denver.
