The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has canceled its television ads in Colorado’s 7th District for the first half of October, marking a potentially debilitating setback for Democratic challenger Dave Thomas.
Republicans immediately hailed the DCCC’s move as a sign that Democrats had given up on beating Rep. Bob Beauprez (R), who won his first term in 2002 by only 121 votes — the closest race in the 2002 midterm election.
DCCC spokesman Greg Speed scoffed at the Republicans’ assessment of the race, saying the campaign committee had simply reserved airtime and was now “tinkering” with its strategy.
“There was never a guarantee
was going to be spent here,” Speed said, adding that reserving TV time simply “gave us the flexibility” to spend dollars where the DCCC saw fit.
