Oh, help.... I've just become precinct captain.

Yes, today.

The previous one bailed on us. No one else was willing to take the leadership position, so I'm stuck with it because I at least can usually organize even my cats into relatively straight lines.

No one's told me what I need to do. What is this job?

I know this sounds stupid, but I'm a committee type - Party caucuses and committees are far more my style.

2. Find active Dems and get THEM to call others

There should be street sheets or some type of organizing tool that will help you find the dems that have been active in the past. Call or email them and ask them for help.

I'm in a similar position in northern VA, and people are VERY interested in helping - they just need to be told what to do.

Also, here in VA we have a combined campaign, where KE works with the local dems. If you can connect with them, they will give you volunteers.

Whatever you do, it will help.

Mostly the job is to meet the voters in your precinct, identify Democrats, register voters, hand out literature, offer to drive them to the polls on election day.

4. I just became one about a month ago.

Now is such a short time before the elections--even shorter than I've had. I obtained a voting history list with all the address and histories, organized them into order by street and street number. Then I printed my own walking list out and go by that. I'm just finishing my first lit drop along with introducing myself and presenting a letter about voter registration, absentee ballots, yardsigns, deadlines, etc.

Next, the Kernan-Davis campaign gave me a "2nd wave" call list. I'm going to call all the people they have listed and canvass over the phone a little every night. Then I'm going to send the info to my Dem party (local) and to the Kernan-Davis campaign and Donnelly campaigns to see my precinct outlook.

Then, on the last week, I plan to do a more focused literature drop on all the unscreened and undecideds and swingers.

Then, on election day, I am taking a few people to the polls who can't drive.

I don't know what else I can do.

My focus right now has been to get ahold of every person before the last day of voter registration which is Monday. I have one apartment complex left, then I'm done!!! Whew! It's (you guessed it) HARD WORK!!!!

I'm in Boulder County too. I signed on because there were only 5 people at my caucus, and I didn't really know what I was getting into. Thank God the other person who signed up as precinct captain has done this before, and is doing most of the actual work.

Where we are at this point is that we have a list of Democratic and Unafiliated voters confirmed to be living in the precinct. We are supposed to start calling them, with a call script, or contacting them directly. We are also supposed to do a literature drop in the next couple of weeks.

You should have a booklet that has all of the things you're supposed to be doing and when, as well as various phone scripts.

You will need to get as many people as possible to volunteer for you. You should be able to get info on frequent voters, and contact them to look for volunteers. Delegating is everything.

Since you sound like a pretty organized and energetic person, unlike me, I think you'll do fine, even though it's pretty intimidating.

8. I've spent about 15 hours in meetings and 20 hours walking.

In Arapahoe County we have organized into House District committees. We had a big literature drop last week. I have also walked with a candidate. I may take off a week to transport people to vote early (Oct. 18-29).
