DENVER -- County officials vented their frustrations over a troubled welfare computer in a meeting with Gov. Bill Owens on Monday but said they would keep working with the system.
The new computer has been blamed for delaying food stamps, pension payments, Medicaid and other vital services for hundreds of thousands of people. Owens ordered the computer system to go online on Sept. 1 despite pleas from county officials who said it wasn't ready.
Half a dozen county officials met with Owens for an hour and afterward said the old system of distributing benefits was no longer usable.

About 22,000 people who care for grandchildren were warned they may not get their checks Oct. 1, but state Human Services director Marva Hammons said Monday she expects most of those checks to go out on time.
(DID they? It's October 4th, mid-afternoon... Doesn't Bill Owens claim to be a "compassionate conservative?")
