GATES: MUSGRAVE MUST COME CLEAN ON OFFICE SCANDAL
Democrat calls on Congresswoman to disclose relevant information and stop abusing taxpayer money
Denver, CO—Colorado Democratic Party Chair Chris Gates issued the following statement today in response to revelations that Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave appears to be running her re-election campaign out of her taxpayer-funded Congressional office:
“I’m deeply disturbed by the recent facts that have come to my attention regarding Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave’s campaign activities. The facts we have to go on leave us with no choice but to conclude that Congresswoman Musgrave is operating her campaign out of her taxpayer-funded Congressional office, which, if true, is a violation of federal law.
“These are serious violations of both the law and the ethical standards we expect of our elected representatives. The residents of the Fourth Congressional District expect more, and I urge them to demand more at the polls on election day.
“Congresswoman Musgrave, it is your duty to the people of Colorado to make public the following information immediately:
1) The original signed and dated (notarized) lease for your Congressional office with full legal description of the space covered by the lease.
2) The original signed and dated (notarized) lease for your campaign office with full legal description of the space covered by the lease.
3) The original work order for the telephone numbers 970-593-9060 and 970-593-9054.”
Gates’ statement refers to the following facts:
Musgrave’s taxpayer-funded Congressional office is located at 5401 Stone Creek Circle, Suite 201, in Loveland, CO. Campaign literature lists Musgrave’s campaign office as 5401 Stone Creek Circle, Suite 777. In the two-story building at 5401 Stone Creek Circle, Suite 777 in fact does not exist. It is illegal for a member of Congress to use public funds to pay for campaign activities, to use campaign funds to pay for a Congressional office, or to solicit or accept campaign funds in a Congressional office. Members of the public asking to access Musgrave’s campaign office are sent to a back entrance to her Congressional office—an entrance clearly not intended for public access and not marked in any way.
