Wide-open field

The calendar may say it's still 2004, but already Colorado's political talk in centered on who will replace term-limited GOP Gov. Bill Owens in two years.
Democrats pulled off stunning victories in November - including winning control of both chambers of the legislature for the first time in 44 years. They are salivating at the idea of taking back the governor's seat, too.

Stung Republicans also are discussing strategy and grooming potential candidates.
"The field is wide open," said Roy Palmer, Owens' former chief of staff.
So wide open that some say it could be an election where a wild card steps in.
The Rocky Mountain News polled more than 50 politicians, party bigwigs and little guys, businessmen, consultants and lobbyists to ask who they thought stood the best chance of winning in 2006.
The names that popped up most often were U.S. Reps. Bob Beauprez, a Republican, and Mark Udall, a Democrat. Both have strong ties to Boulder County.
