6. C'mon, otohara!
Let's go and start some dialogue!

I voted for him, but I was very disturbed at the way his campaign subvrted Mike Mile's legitimate bid for the Senate. More politically expedient to elect Salazar? Only because he's an inside lapdog for the Democrat-sum-Republicans that loved Nighthouse-Campbell. :eyes:

4. Shall we ask him what is more important,
supporting Gonzales' nomination because he's Latino, or supporting human rights, not torture, for peoples of color throughout the Middle East. :grr:

7. And this is the Democratic success story of 2004?
Maybe it was only a success because the repukes knew he would be their man on the votes.

What an utter disappointment. I hope some of you go to this. I would except I'm in Wisconsin.

Please report back to us if you attend!

8. What an incredibly misleading thread
You left out a couple of important details.....

Denver, CO – U.S. Senator Ken Salazar will hold five town hall meetings to talk with and solicit the views of Coloradans about the long-term health of the Social Security system and the President’s privatization plan. Senator Salazar will discuss the impacts of the President’s privatization plan on Colorado, including possible reductions in benefits, the excessive implementation costs and the resulting deficit crisis.

Senator Salazar said, “It’s my belief that the President’s privatization plan for Social Security is just bad medicine – but I would like to discuss this important issue with Coloradans. In the end, we need to maintain our commitment to a secure retirement for all Americans, while not piling mountains of debt on our children and future generations.”

9. How Kind of Mr. Salazar To Hold Meetings On
something that most democrats agree on already. Bush's SS plan sucks.

Why no town hall meetings seeking democratic views on the confirmations of Alberto Gonzales and Condi Rice?

12. How about piling mountains of Karma on our children?
Edited on Thu Feb-24-05 04:04 PM by intheflow
Salazar's already pledged to support mountains of debt for our children by voting in favor of Gonzales and Rice, and thus the Bush war effort.

And SS is a non-issue within the party. Hell, it's even a non-issue for many Republicans. I've heard any overhaul of SS is dead already--it's just the Rove-controlled media spin that keeps spouting the issue, no doubt to draw attention and discussion away from actual issues like stolen elections and WH propaganda efforts.

Gonzales and Rice are not "issues". If not them, then it would have been two other people equally unqualified. Or, maybe worst. The Goss appointment scares me more than these two morons. If you disagree with how Salazar voted on these appointees then you should let him know. But don't carve an "X" in his forehead.

We could discuss the whole Executive Precedent thing, but that involves politics and all the nasty vile stuff associated with it.

Regarding the whole Social Security Issue and Non-Issue.... my 2 cents worth .... it's a campaign tool that the repukes are pushing hard. It stands no more chance of passing than the GMA but that's not the point. It's all about building a larger voter base. It's all about staying one or two steps ahead of the Democrats. It's about winning elections ..... and in case you haven't noticed the repukes are getting better and better at it.

Cut Salazar some slack. Christ. His desk chair isn't even warm yet and you've already grabbed your torches and pitchforks......

14. I have sent letters to Mr. Salazar.
But I didn't care for the way state politics undermined Democratic process when Miles candidacy was supplanted by Salazar. There is much to admire about Salazar personally, but so far he has voted the complete opposite of what I would have voted. In fact, life-long, radical Democrat I am, I was tempted to vote for Coors because he doesn't support the death penalty. That Salazar supports the death penalty and also supported a person I consider one step away from a torturer--Salazar has offended my most deeply held moral and ethical beliefs.

I also don't believe all, or even most, Republicans are really all that gung-ho about pushing Bush's radical SS proposals. SS is an enormously popular program, and most areas of the country were so evenly split in the vote that it would be political suicide for most Republicans to support it without reservation.

And Republicans are winning elections because of their financial backing, their religious rhetoric that doesn't match their actions, and by having close ties a small cadre of media outlets that control most of the airwaves in the United States. That, and the fact that the Democratic Party seems to have abdicated its ideals. The party's been so afraid of losing votes that it seems they have ceased being the opposition party. Yet one need only look at the roses sent to Barbara Boxer to know how hungry people on the left are for a sign--any sign--that our Senate Democrats are listening to us. I only wish we had sent that many roses to every other Senator and Congressperson who voted against Gonzales' appointment.

Really sorry for the tirade, F.Gordon. It's been a long day, and I've been fighting with Republicans all day. Nothing personal meant toward you.

15. oh god
Miles was in the race for a year and raised barely 100,000 dollars. Thankfully, the Party was able to get Salazar into the race so that the Republicans are one less vote away from a filibuster proof majority.

Social Security is the most important issue right now. Democrats all over the country are holding these town meetings to educate their consitutients on the danger of these plans. This is how politics works.

16. No problem. That's what I'm here for
tirades
:hi:

You mentioned children before. Did you know that there are roughly 50,000 children in Colorado under the age of 18 that depend on Social Security benefits?

The Social Security battle goes much deeper than Social Security itself. It is about the immediate impact it will have on Medicare, Medicaid, Poverty, and Education. It is about the Republicans courting a few 20 something voters over to their side at the expense of millions of people struggling in this country.

Did you know that Colorado is ranked 44th in the nation for K-12 education spending? Did you know that Colorado is ranked 46th in the nation for High School completion? These are horrible statistics.

Have you noticed the subtle increase in right wing media attacks on the Hispanic community in this state? They make a big deal about a few illegals getting HUD loans but ignore the 1000's of fraudulent loans that have been made in this state to the white folk.

I could go on...but my point is this. Take some of that old radical energy you have and focus it locally. Gonzales and Rice are bad people. Who in the bush* adminstration isn't?

Oh, and do you know what source of capital investment is the toothpick holding up the Colorado economy right now? You can have a global heart, but Colorado needs local minds and souls.

17. Re: Social Security
Yes, I absolutely know about child benefits. My ex-husband was murdered when our son was 8, and that SS money enabled me to adequately provide for my child, which I could not have done on my income alone. I know those benefits have been steadily declining. For example, I understand that when I left HS in '82, had I chosen to attend college my mother could have received benefits for me until I turned 21 (my father died when I was 14). I received benefits for my son until he turned 18 in 2000. Now my best friend, whose husband died when her son was young, will lose her benefits when her son turns 16 in a couple months. That's two years less than I had just 5 years ago. Worrisome indeed!

I am admittedly new to Colorado politics, transplanted 4 years ago from Massachusetts, the liberal Mecca of the U.S. So you can't blame me for being a bit paranoid about Democratic politics out here in the Land of Nighthorse-Campbell. So far I haven't seen anything from Salazar to reassure me he doesn't have similar fence-jumping tendencies. :scared:

Still, I had no idea Colorado ranked so low in public ed spending, which is shameful for such a wealthy state! And while it's hard to miss the racism in Colorado, I didn't know about the loan scams by whites. I also don't know what you're talking about with the capital investing. I'm sorry I don't have the time to get more involved in state politics, but am focusing my energies and my career on battling religious right/religious nationalism issues. As you know, that's another uphill battle in this state.

F.Gordon, I appreciate your kind response to my post. Thank you! :pals:

19. Just when I thought what I'm going through right now
...was bad. I realize that there are others who have had to deal with much more difficult situations. Losing a loved one that way.... can't even imagine. Hope that moving to Colorado has given you the opportunity to live a new positive life. Despite the frustrating state of politics here, it's still one of the best places in the country to live. IMO. Lots of good people here.

Sadly, racism is alive and well in this state. Because of the White-Flight that has gone on here, in earnest, over the last 10-15 years... most people just don't "see" it. Out of sight. Out of mind.

I sincerely apologize for not responding sooner to your post. I’m a little on edge these days and my posts are a little more abrasive than normal so I try to avoid clicking on my DU bookmark.

..and Welcome to Colorado. If you've been here for 4 years you only have 3 more to go and you can call yourself a native.
