No one knows this better than former Secretary of State General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.). As one of the 21st century's most fervent purveyors of democratic values, Powell understands the role of diplomacy in furthering the universal ideal of democracy. He understands that the power of persuasion, reason and trust-building are a critical tool in getting governments to cooperate for the common good.
Powell will speak on "Diplomacy: Persuasion, Trust and Values" at the 2005 Celebration of Success, Monday, June 6. The Business School's accomplishments during the past year and its vision for the year to come are other highlights of this annual fund-raiser and celebration.
As one of the most respected statesmen in U.S. history and one of the more revered and admired people in America, Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal.
Having been appointed by President George W. Bush and unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate, Powell was sworn in at the 65th Secretary of State on Jan. 20, 2001. A four-star general and 35-year soldier, he was assistant to the president for National Security Affairs and the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff - the highest military position in the Department of Defense. During this time, Powell oversaw 28 crises, including Operation Desert Storm in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
Celebration of Success is the largest gathering of the business community in the region and supports student scholarships and faculty fellowships.
