National DU Meetup (Part 2) - Racine's in Denver? Or any other suggestions?
I'm just counting the people who will be present in Denver and want to set up a DU meetup? I'd like to propose one and have one set up on any day except Thurs and Friday - since I'll be out of town (to Obama's hometown in Chicago)

Maybe Wednesday night nearby - like Racine's or something?

I need to know how many people are interested so we can hold a reservation for a big group (Racine's is a very nice casual restaurant with lots of places to sit, inside or outside, and it's not far from Pepsi Center)

1. sounds good to me, HawkeyeX!
and I don't care where it is, as long as it isn't in Saudi Aurora, as one of my friends refers to her far eastern suburb home. I think that staying out of downtown is good- it sounds like it is going to be a zoo.

3. It would be great to meet you and your Mom, also Ava!
and I saw your post about the room. Sorry, but I am not in the situation at this time to be able to help. Now, if I can help by picking you up somewhere (although I will be working during the day), I would be happy to. Guess I had better clean my car, just in case.

I would like to bring my 17 year old, if I can coax her. She is at that age where friends are all important.

5. hey, how about the Mercury Cafe?
www.mercurycafe.com
The events for the night already sound political http://www.mercurycafe.com/sub.php?content=calendar&, normally, it would be the tango night. I love that place- it is so full of energy and peace! Plenty of organic and healthy food, also!

7. There are fundraising events at the Merc both Wed. & Thurs. nights.
I know my pocketbook can't afford a benefit anything--it'll stretch me just to go out that night. :( Monday night Cynthia McKinney will be speaking--interesting speaker but no doubt a packed house. Probably not conducive to a meet-up.

8. yeah, you're probably right
I just love the mood of "the Merc". From the beaded curtain as you enter to the awesome dance floor, it just exemplifies everything the Democratic party stands for. And from a traffic view point, it would be best to stay out of LoDo. Even the Post Office is playing it extra cautious- closing the Mile Hi PO and taking out all of the blue collection boxes for the week. Yeah, Racines sounds cool- I've never been there, but it seems like a cool place.

27. Cynthia McKinney?!!! DAMN!!!!
I really want to hear her..... I can't imagine driving around downtown that night... it will be a crazy zoo, but I REALLY WANT TO HEAR CYNTHIA!

Thanks for the heads up!

6. I'm in.
Racine's sounds good, it's got a nice relaxing atmosphere. Just give me the time. Think I'll be handing out UFP&J flyers and taking photos during the day, it'll be great to have a meet-up at night.

10. yeah, Wednesday would be better for me
Tuesday night is my union meeting night, but honestly I think I'm going to try to fit in a visit to the bookstore at Park Meadows to meet Thom Hartmann beforehand. Racines Wednesday night?

14. OK. I'll make some phone calls when I get back from NY
probably going to start making calls and figuring out how many people will show up. I'll conservatively estimate about 20 people....

15. I'm so bummed....
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 11:41 AM by Buddyblazon
I am the stage manager at the Fillmore....we have DNC related shows booked during the week....and because all of them include very odd load ins and decor...I am booked everyday (and our days our VERY long...14-18 hours).

It most likely means that after years of being a DUer...my first chance to not only meet another DUer...but a whole gaggle of them will not happen

Perhaps an additional late night meet up at Pete's? They're open 24/7 and have amazing food. I know I occasionally stop by there on the way home from work at 2-2:30 in the morning.

Any night owls down to meet up for late night eats?

On edit:

To perhaps wrangle in a few people that don't know...Pete's Kitchen is a Denver institution (been there since the '40's or '50's)...they're inexpensive...have great food...really fast....and they're filled with patrons around the clock.

Please please PLEASE somebody say yes.

Don't feel bummed - you're a part of history!

You and I should go over to Hick's place, drain some brewski's and shoot some pool after the dust settles down.

You want to go to Pete's? I'm all for it - it's that place on Colfax near the Fillmore, right?

18. Hicks been on my stage at The Fillmore a few times...
I also had him on my stage for the Mile Hi Music Festival.

Wynkoop would be great. Their Shepards Pie is one of my favorites.

And yes...Pete's Kitchen is up the street from The Fillmore. I'd love to grab a beer

I love Pete's but have work & DNC events every morning, so I can't be there at 2am. :(

22. That's the problem.
We are a Union house...and though I use to work in my venue (and all the other Union concert venues in Denver) as a Union Hand...my position now is NOT a Union position.

I basically can't leave. I get there at 8-9am...and I'm there until 2-3am. I'm basically the manager that has to be visible close to all the time. :(

Though this being load-ins on non-show days...I'm not sure if my hours are going to be like my usual hours. I may actually be off by 7pm on the non-show days.

Our Production Manager might also allow me to leave for lunch or dinner on those non-show days. I'll just have to play it by ear.

Such is the curse of my job. I'm a shit magnet.

Should we all crash the Fillmore and liberate you?

"Honest, Boss, a gang of Democrats just burst in and kidnapped me for an hour!"

It could work... :P

29. We have a private party on Wednesday.
The Roots are playing. I'll be there until late late :(

I told my Production Manager (he's also an ex-roommate and good friend) about how bummed about not being able to come to the meet-up I was. I'm hoping he can let me out early.

But early means 12-1AM.

And I would love it if you guys came and liberated me. But as they're building a temporary fence around our backstage lot...I'm pretty sure showing up and saying you wanted to liberate me...would not be greeted well hehe. My crew would get a kick out of it. But security would flip their wigs ;)

But I have off starting Thursday. I physically will need a rest though at least for a day.

I have no idea how I am going to make it through to Thursday. I've just been abused with work the past week...and the shows are getting harder and harder. Just so many people...and equipment...and volunteers...and "Head Honchos"...and "Big Wigs".

I'm a shit magnet at these events :(
