15. Irrelevant. The kid was out of control and backed into a corner...
...with no way to outflank him. Any direct physical intervention would have carried significant risk of serious injury to either the cop and/or the child.

Also irrelevant (to the immediate situation) is how he came to be out of control, or what abuse he might have suffered in the past that set him up to snap so spectacularly.

He had to be stopped then and there. The cop chose what appears to be the safest alternative for ALL parties involved.

18. Thank you.
What people dont seem to understand is that there HAS to be an alternate way to control someone in situations like this aside from shooting them.

5. In my opinion a Taser is a last resort.
If they only used a mild shock perhaps this was better than trying to take away the piece of pipe. If the officer had used his night stick it may have turned out worse. At least he did not shoot the kid.

7. This is ridiculous.
I can't believe a fully grown police officer could not just outwait or subdue a 10-year-kid with a stick.

16. I think hand to hand contact with the child could result in greater injury
But I do think the thing should be put on the lowest setting.

11. When did unruly children
become police business?? I'm sure you have all heard about the 10 yr old girl that was tasered because she refused to take a shower.
My question is this - When a parent calls the police to report a misbehaving child, why do the police even respond in the first place???
When did basic parenting become police jurisdiction???

12. Police dispatchers and calltakers cannot refuse a request for police service
No matter how ridiculous or inane that request seems. It has been my experience that police are called fairly often for out of control children or for parents who want the officer to set their child straight. Unfortunately, a lifetime of poor parenting cannot be changed with a single visit by a police officer. Once the parents relinquish their duties to the police, the child's behavior usually becomes worse.

14. When they are doing thousands of dollars of damage and more every second;
When parents and carers are forbidden from doing the things they would have done in the past to contain such situations. Oftimes a good thing, sometimes arguably not. When you have no options yourself, you call in outside help.

"Child whisperers" are nearly as rare as rocking horse shit. That one could/might have talked this kid down is irrelevant. One was not there to do so. One is almost never there to do so.

What is different between now and then? I'd say a major difference is the idea of redeeming 'broken' children at all costs. In the past this child and others like him (assuming anyone intervened at all to remove them from the situation that created them) would quickly have gravitated to facility for 'troubled' children and ceased to be an 'issue' for the general public.

Today, again and again we will make the attempt to rehabilitate until we succeed or (I susspect more likely) the child becomes an adult and a problem for the criminal justice system.

Please note, I am not making any judgements on which is better, simply pointing out why we didn't see things like this in the past.

19. It's true.
Police cannot refuse a call for service no matter what its for. We have one lady who calls to report that someone is taking bites out of her peanut butter and jelly on a daily basis. However, a hysterical child smashing up property with a large pipe and spinning out of control where there is a threat that he could do more damage to anyone and everyone in the house or even grab a gun or knife in a fit of rage and kill someone is definately an emergency! A pretty big one! Its sad but the cold hard fact is that kids that age and younger are killing people these days. Not saying that isnt part of a bigger problem in itself but something HAS to be done in the moment to gain control of the situation to protect life. Thats the bottom line.

13. I guess people would rather
wait for the kid to knock a deputies eye out with the lead pipe first.

17. Maybe
they would rather see the deputy get his skull bashed in with the pipe before they are allowed to do anything about it, some teeth knocked out, maybe a broken arm and hand from trying to take the pipe away......IDK. Never mind the fact that the house was completely trashed from all the damage he did with the pipe to begin with and that the kid was completely out of control. What do people expect? Honestly? I really want to know what everyone else would have done in this situation! Would their opinions be different if the kid had a gun or a knife?!
