Frivolous (?) plea for Coloradoans to request Trader Joes in CO
Edited on Sun Dec-27-09 08:15 PM by hlthe2b
I am so damned over Whole Foods (aka Whole Paycheck) and would love the variety and far better prices that Trader Joe's offers. Unbelievably they have expanded throughout the US, skipping Colorado. If you feel similarly (or just don't mind filling out an online email request), please
do so at the following link:

Thanks fellow Coloradoans!

3. I like Sunflower.. but it is fairly distant from me...
The Trader Joe fascination for me is primarily because of their range and variety of products, including imported selections.... I don;t know Sprouts but will check it out.
;)

5. When I lived in Tucson, my wife loved Trader Joe's there
so yeah, we support the idea of having a Trader Joe's around here.

2. Did you know that Vitamin Cottage is a privately owned, Colorado company?
Many of their prices are better than King Soopers. They don't have quite the selection of WF, but I manage to get everything I need there.

That said, I will send an email! I hate WF.

:hi:

7. ... Why ...
I talked to a Trader Joe's manager some time ago and found out that the reason Colorado's been skipped is due to the Blue Laws and our archaic requirement to sell lower alcohol content beer and no wine or spirits at grocery stores. If Colorado law could be changed to permit full strength alcohol (beer, wine, and spirits) to be sold at grocery stores, there is a high probability that Trade Joe's would come to Colorado. Liquor store owners would scream as their monopoly would be destroyed.

9. The problem is that grocery stores can't sell wine in Colorado
That's a big profit maker for Trader Joe's (two buck chuck), and so they won't expand here. At least that's what I understand.

10. I know the attempt to change this failed, but how do Super Target
stores get around it? They sell all the Johnny Walker scotch series, various liqueurs, vodka, gin and wine-- you name it.

Seems that TJ's ought to be able to get around it similarly...

11. Do you mean Costco?
I was at a ST today, I'm pretty sure I would've noticed the booze, I think. :D

I know Costco got around it with a massive gated-off section that closed on Sundays, with its own liquor license IIRC.

13. I forget the name of the "reasoning" but
only 1 store of the chain can sell booze (Target, Cost Plus, etc). The exception being Costco where they're attached but not in-house. There's only 1 Target, 1 Cost Plus and 1 Safeway, each, that sells regular spirits, for their chains and that's mostly why Trader Joe's won't expand to here - only one of their stores could sell spirits.

It's a bummer because I'd love me some $2 buck Chuck....and the TJ's house-made roasted red pepper hummus.

It's really been the meat we've missed from Whole Foods.
