Democrats counting on Salazar

BOSTON -- To hear some Democrats talk at their party's national convention this week, Ken Salazar could be the secret weapon in their campaign to win back control of the Senate.
Salazar, the Colorado attorney general and the party's likely nominee to run for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, is one of six candidates Democratic strategists are counting on most in November to help them take control of the Senate, which has been in Republican hands by a slim margin since the 2002 elections.
Salazar, who would be the first Hispanic member of the Senate in more than 25 years if he wins, says he thinks Colorado is as eager for a change as the party's leadership is.
"I see more energy in Colorado for this election in 2004 than I have in any previous election," he told reporters and editors from Gannett News Service and USA Today on Thursday. "People in this country just want a government they can trust."
