Primaries pique voters' interest

Contested Senate, DA races may spur more turnout than usual

Early voting begins in earnest today for Colorado's primary election, an event that traditionally draws a wretched turnout.

Two years ago, only 15 percent of voters marked ballots in the primary election, said Lisa Doran, spokeswoman for the Colorado secretary of state.

But politicos say there appears to be an increased interest this year, stemming from heated Democratic and Republican contests in the U.S. Senate race; contested district attorney races in some areas; and a gearing up for the presidential showdown in November.

With another eight days of voting left, some county clerks already report a record number of absentee ballots returned.
