Hartford March was great!
Just got back and must run out again, but the march in Hartford was great. It was the most diverse crowd I have seen, the youngsters are finally showing up. Lots of good signs and chants. It left from the Armory and then went through the Frog Hollow neighborhood, down Park Street ending with a rally on South Green. There were well over 500 people and a contingent from DumpJoe.com. I thought the crowd size was pretty good considering they didn't get the march permit until last night. Very well organized. We will be going up to Boston tomorrow. Anyone hear how NYC is going/went?

3. It was great -- there were people hanging out the windows cheering
us on, people honking their horns. Very enthusiastic.

6. Frog Hollow and Park Street were wonderful---as I posted elsewhere
people were out on the street, supportive-watching from windows. It was great to be in a real neighborhood with real people who--like the marchers--are really affected by Bush's policies, as opposed to being at the cap where lawmakers pay no attention.

8. Park Street is fine during the daytime
My father has had a small business in the Frog Hollow section of Park Street since the 1970s...well, it started on Zion Street...

He hasn't had any problems there since the 1970s. I remember a few times back in the 70s (or maybe early 80s) where we got calls from the Hartford police about break-ins at his store. But, it's been fine since then.

9. I used to ride my bike everyday through Frog Hollow going from Newington
to my job at the Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe Houses--never a problem. The Mercado on Park is great--and I can't say enough about how great the feel of the neighborhoods was marching there yesterday.

10. they've done a lot of work
They made a lot of strides in the past 5-10 years there. Refurbished building faces, new businesses, etc.

11. windows smashed out
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 05:37 PM by danalytical
Last time I went to Park Street my windows got smashed out and I was attacked for being the wrong color in the wrong the neighborhood. That was about 7 years ago now. I also had a friend get stabbed in the leg over there. I have been hearing about a lot of rebuilding in that area, but I would call it safe. It must be light years ahead of where it was 7 years ago though. I'm glad everything went well, and hopefully I can make it to the next march.

2. Did you see any TV cameras?
Because we sure as hell haven't seen any footage from anywhere, yet.

4. It followed the St. Patty's day parade directly, so lots of coverage.
Channel 30 had a camera set up at the rally filming the speakers. My son found all the cameras he could, so look for a 7 year old with a UCONN basketball t-shirt -- that will be him.

7. TNH did a story (lame) and 30 had cameras up at the stage
at the end point--so there was more coverage than I've ever seen. Courant also had a story with number reported at 1,000--given by organizer and not contested.
