How MANY attended 3/19/05 protests?
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=2782

Per the United for Peace and Justice events calendar and the anti-war vigil listings of the American Friends Service Committee and Sojourners Magazine these were cities that had protests scheduled in your state.

CONNECTICUT: Danbury, Hartford, Madison, New Haven, Norwalk, Shelton, West Hartford

Due to a media blackout, we don't know how many attended. Can you post whatever you have, pics numbers, arrests on this main thread?

I attended a Protest March in Minneapolis, MN. One of several and I know we had 1,500 - which the media reported as "over 1,000" and provided terrible pictures.

The DU has better pics:

2. Good turn out in Hartford--the Courant has 1,000 (number from an organizer
--the organzizers did a FABULOUS job, the DumpJoe folks were out and looking for volunteers (they got 'em)--it was the best I've ever seen in CT. More multi-cultural than ever, lots of young poeple (which had not been the case before--someone had wisely announced it in a bar the night before and got lots of people that way). At one point, as we walked down Park St. (the heart of the Latino community) a woman was leaning out her window waving the peace sign--she had a big sign hanging from her sill that said, "This is not a war. This is an abuse. Bring the troops home." People were out on the side walks watching, cars were blowing horns, and it was just lively and great! Amazing, too, since the city wouldn't give permits until the last minute. It was good to have it on the heels of the St. Patrick's Day parade, and the locations chosen were more visible than the usual rally at the state cap. I've got great pics, but don't know how to post. No arrests--police were good, although they did have the obligatory policman on the roof photographing us. We waved. We had flag-draped coffins and they were a good reminder of why we were there and made a good, solid statement for onlookers.

10. Danbury has an INDY News Service
http://www.madhattersimc.org

I found the INDY News Article. It says both 1,200 and 1,000, but they may have been counting people who joined the march along the way. It sounds like after recent issues in the Frog Hollow neighborhood people were hungry for something positive and the Peace March got a wonderful response.

<snip>
On March 19, the global day of action against the war in Iraq, CT United for Peace marched with 1200+ people in the streets in Hartford after a month long battle with city officials and the police dept. During the course of the month the city wanted to charge thousand of dollars for police services, public works and ambulance fees for the protest.

<snip>
Protestors made their way to Barnard Park for an afternoon of music, poetry and speakers from the many groups across Connecticut. Protestors had traveled in carpools and caravans from Willimantic, New London, Danbury, Bridgeport, New Haven and Stamford/Greenwich to make this one of the biggest rallies that Connecticut had seen.

We are not going away but getting stronger each day!” was the clear message. As more people die, as more people lose jobs, medical benefits, as more children are left behind, this movement will grow. We will not rest until we” “End this Endless War At Home and Abroad and Bring the Troops Home Now!

Can you email me the pics here on DU? If they are digital, I think my husband can help me figure it out.

11. Actually, it's awesome.
Nile, I read about one girl who wound up all by herself protesting at a Taco Bell in FL. The thing is even one person standing up and telling the Truth to Power is awesome because you are connected to millions around the world who are shifting the consciousness of nations one little pocket of resistence at a time.

Two is a start and something to be damm proud of because you're doing the right thing whether you've got a crowd behind you or not.

5. Unknown Shelton Protest
I had to stay home with the kids, but I would have considered checking out the Shelton one. However, there was no info I could find on the site about location, time, etc. Anyone have this info?

When Did Peace Become Offensive?
A friend of mine attends peace demonstrations. At one event his little girl asked, "If people who support war have the flag as a symbol, what is our symbol?"

Let me help you, Mark, the little girl is looking at the wrong flag for those who support war.

Here is the one for warmongers:

13. Some information....
I found an editorial and it looks like it was at the Norwalk City Hall around 12:30 - at least that's when the freepers showed up.

http://www.fairfieldweekly.com/gbase/News/content.html?oid=oid:13587
<snip>
I took my two boys to the peace demonstration on East Avenue in front of Norwalk City Hall this Saturday. I don't usually bring them, but my wife was busy, so I did. At about 12:30, a large number of pro-war folks turned up and positioned themselves on the median directly opposite us pro-peace folks. Once assembled, they began yelling at us: "Leave the country," "We're the majority," and other assorted rude comments that I won't write.

Someone should tell Mark Stephenson to tell his boys those people were mistaken. The majority (87%) want US out of Iraq and all over the world people protested the war in large and small pockets.
