Dialy Kos: Looks like Ned Lamont to take on Lieberman
CT-Sen: Looks like Ned Lamont to take on Lieberman
by kos
Sat Jan 07, 2006 at 02:12:32 PM PDT

It looks increasingly likely that wealthy Connecticut businessman Ned Lamont will give Lieberman
a primary challenge.

Lamont has apparently promised to spend over a million dollars of his own money on the race.
Lowell Weicker will support his campaign and should be present at the announcement. Kiki Kennedy,
Ted's wife, has been promoting Lamont to her personal circle -- the Lamonts and Kennedys apparently
have long had a warm relationship. Connecticut Citizen Action Group is apparently aboard.

The big questions are whether DFA and MoveOn get involved as they've been threatening the past couple
of months. DFA's Jim Dean is being lobbyied hard by Lieberman on Monday. We'll see how that goes.
MoveOn's involvement (which would equal money and boots on the ground) would also be crucial to
Lamont's chances.

Political Junkie diaried Ned yesterday

For those of us outside Connecticut, who is Ned Lamont and
does he really have a chance against Joe Lieberman?

4. I don't know Lamont, but I know Tom Swan, Exec Director of CCAG
If Tom thinks that Lamont is worth taking a leave of absence from his job at CCAG to be Lamont's campaign manager, then Lamont must be worth the risk.

MyLeftBlog is reporting that CT citizens can meet Lamont on Jan. 21 http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=215

WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m.
WHERE: New Haven Public Library, corner of Church and Elm, on the Green.

Unfortunately, I can't attend. I have to work that weekend.

If anyone goes, please give us a report.

6. Here's a story on Ned Lamont's background

(snip)
Ned Lamont, whose family tree includes a Who's Who of Wall Street and a famous student of socialism, said Monday he is leaning toward challenging Lieberman for the Democratic nomination.
(snip)
As a Greenwich businessman descended from a long line of Wall Street bankers, Lamont laughingly concedes he is not Central Casting's idea for the role of a candidate who would challenge Lieberman from the left.

His great-grandfather was Thomas W. Lamont, a partner of J.P. Morgan and an adviser to President Woodrow Wilson. In November 1929, Thomas Lamont was featured on the cover of Time magazine as a symbol of Wall Street. Ned Lamont's grandfather and father also held prominent positions at J.P. Morgan & Co. Lamont's stay at the firm was limited to an eight-week internship when he was 19.

"It was quite enough for me," Lamont said.

His grandfather's brother was Corliss Lamont, a philosopher, civil libertarian and student of socialism who was cited for contempt of Congress after defying the authority of Sen. Joseph McCarthy to inquire into the political beliefs of private citizens.

(Yep, THAT Corliss Lamont, who lived for many years at his Ossining, NY estate, not too far from my home! He had been a major benefactor of the Westchester Peoples Action Coalition-WESPAC-the local umbrella org for various peace/justice orgs in Westchester County, NY)

And, if I'm not mistaken, a leading figure in the Ethical Culture Society.
