Ambassador Joe Wilson Takes on Bush + Iraq Intelligence..Join Him
“If we go in, we sure as hell had better find that stuff, and if we don’t we will be in a lot of trouble.” -Chris Shays on WMDs in Iraq, Westport Town Hall Meeting, 2/23/03
We haven’t found “that stuff” because it was never there, and the Bush administration knew it. On July 6, 2003, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson wrote an op-ed essay chronicling how the White House exaggerated about the extent of the Iraqi nuclear weapons program, sending shockwaves through the country.
Wilson, a career foreign service diplomat and ambassador to Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe under President George H.W. Bush, revealed that he had gone to Niger on behalf of the CIA in early 2002 to investigate whether Iraq had attempted to purchase yellow cake uranium from that African nation. He reported back that he had found no evidence whatsoever to support this claim, but eleven months later it found its way into President Bush’s State of the Union address, as part of his rationale for the invasion of Iraq.
As Wilson’s op-ed concluded, the Bush administration manipulated intelligence about Saddam Hussein's weapons programs to justify the invasion of Iraq.
The Bush administration responded to Wilson’s courageous revelations the only way they know how: they went personal, exposing his wife, Valerie Plame. White House officials deliberately leaked Plame’s identity as an undercover CIA operative in an attempt to discredit Wilson.
Plame had been working on tracking Iranian nuclear proliferation, but the White House didn’t care. They blew her cover without a second thought, rendering her ineffective and significantly diminishing our intelligence-gathering activities at a critical time and place. They put political damage control over ensuring our national security.
Now, Joe Wilson has a new mission. He is traveling across the country, telling his story and helping to elect candidates who will put our national security first and stand up to those who would lead us into war under false pretenses. Please join me in welcoming him to the Fourth Congressional District.
