I am completely sympathetic to Sen. Lieberman.

His position yesterday was the only one he could take and I hope that he finds solace in the support of his new best friends. The problem with yesterday is not his Iraq position--I really do think that his vote and speech were "principled," -- as well as the only politically viable one. The problem is that it is one in a long line of Joe's actions that have given aid and comfort to the Republicans. Years ago--before Newt--the US Senate WAS a deliberative, collegial body and senators could base their votes on "principle." The Newt revolution changed everything to an us-against-them mentality, and, unfortunately, Joe has joined "them."

My only question now is: If Joe's support gets him any concessions at all from the "other side," why, on earth did he let them allow Santorum, of all people, to give a speech praising him?

1. Sorry, it was not the only position he could take

Hillary Clinton was pro-war as well, but she at least came out in support of the Reed proposal and has not been afraid of criticizing Team Bush for mismanagement of the war. Lieberman has come out & said that any criticism of Team Bush helps the enemy (meaning, it's treason)

2. was it Hillary who said that those on the other

side of the aisle were engaging in "sloganizing"? That is a good description. Her speech was good, but her delivery style is a little flat IMO.

He is so helpful to Republicans that he was called upon to speak and introduced by a Republican that the Hartford Courant yesterday morning described as, "the Bush administration's chief Senate spokesman on military matters."1

Following his remarks cheering the mess in Iraq, Lieberman was praised by Republicans. Ultra-conservative Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) said that Lieberman was "incredibly articulate."

Beyond his tragic misjudgment about Iraq, this sort of collaboration between Lieberman and Republicans does one thing: it undermines all Democrats. Our democracy needs an effective counter-weight to Republican excesses. That is one important role the Democrats play. Joe Lieberman undermines that.

5. I am not sympathetic to him

He undermined Gore's campaign in 2000 by staying in his senate race.

In his own words, the repubs threw a few earmark bones at him and he sold out all americans in
the healthcare bill that John McCain called "No lobbyist left behind".
