Simmons, who represents the 2nd District, planned to return home early this morning, skipping the speech and putting distance between himself and the GOP's conservative leaders.

"I never fully intended to spend the full week in New York," he said Wednesday over a continental breakfast of croissants at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, where the Connecticut delegation is staying. "That's too much time spent away from the district."
