Late last year, liberal Colin McEnroe was canned from WTIC-AM 1080, despite being the highest rated show they had... on the same day, they also canned moderate to liberal Diane Smith from the morning show with RWer Ray Dunaway, leaving him a solo act. Not long before that, they also canned moderate to liberal Stan Simpson. That left 50,000 Watt WTIC AM 1080 with only RWers left on the air.
However, Colin is now returning to the air on CT Public Radio, starting tomorrow, Monday, August 31.
Too Uncool For The Radio? The Jury's Still Out
I wasn't one of those kids who built little crystal sets or tape-recorded fake radio shows into big clunky reel-to-reel recorders.
My former on-air partner Bruce Stevens was exactly that kind of kid growing up in rural Maine, where he so keenly felt the pull of this odd medium that by the time he was 14 he had built his own mini-station out of, I think, several rolls of Reynolds wrap, some copper wire and a heavily sedated moose.
Not me. I didn't even really get radio. When I was a little boy, there were Sunday drives with my parents during which we would pass several radio stations, tiny, boxy buildings about the size of a roadside snack bar. The call letters would be plastered on the front of the building, and I remember wondering how it was possible that Louis Armstrong and an entire big band could fit in such a little space.
