I was quite surprised by this article in the Sunday Hartford Courant. Unfortunately, they endorse Chris Shays as well.
2nd DISTRICT
Two capable candidates are locked in a contentious race to represent this sprawling, 65-town district covering roughly half the state. Rob Simmons of Stonington, the Republican incumbent, seeks his third term and is being challenged by Democrat Jim Sullivan, a financial planner and former Norwich city councilman. Mr. Sullivan is The Courant's choice by virtue of his directness, thoughtful ideas and perspective on economic issues such as Social Security and the need to cut federal spending.
We don't lightly advocate replacing an incumbent, especially one as organized and informed about his district as Mr. Simmons. Disenchantment with him stems from his troubling habit of misrepresenting his positions. He was dubious about going to war in Iraq, saying he didn't believe Iraq represented a "clear and present danger." Two weeks later, he voted to authorize the president to strike, explaining that the United States could not afford to wait.
