Jarjura announces plan to run for lt. governorBy Penelope Overton
WATERBURY -- Five-term Mayor Michael J. Jarjura announced today that he will run for lieutenant governor.
Jarjura is not aligning himself with any Democratic gubernatorial candidate -- in fact, Jarjura said today he would have liked to run for governor, but didn't have the $20 million needed to fend off candidates Ned Lamont and Dannel Malloy -- but instead is preparing for a floor flight for delegates at this month's Democratic convention.
"Our state faces financial challenges of an unprecedented nature," Jarjura said. "To turn this situation around will require strong, decisive leadership that will be unwavering in our mission to restore financial stability and economic prosperity to the people of this great state. Anyone who has followed my career knows that is exactly what you will get with Mike Jarjura."
A self-described moderate Democrat, Jarjura opposes abortion, believes marriage is between a man and a woman and supports the death penalty. While some have told him there is no room for a Democrat like that in state politics, Jarjura said today he has found a lot of support for his centrist positions while criss-crossing the state over the last 90 days.
He announced his candidacy in front of a small group of about 20 staff and supporters at Chase Municipal Building at mid-day.
