CONNECTICUT US HOUSE RESULTS
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING

The DU admins are posting a number of official results threads in the various state forums. These threads are being made available for those members who wish to participate in them on Election Night.

A full listing of campaign results will appear on the DU homepage on Election Night.

This thread is for posting election results ONLY. Please do not use this thread for discussion. There is an entire message board that you can use for discussion. PLEASE PUT THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION IN THE TITLE OF YOUR POST. DON'T FORGET THE DISTRICT NUMBER! Then include the candidate names (Dem first, then Republican), the current result, and the precincts reporting, like so:

04: Candidate A 53%, Candidate B 46%, 38 precincts reporting

For large states with many House races, you may wish to limit your postings in uncontested races to simply posting the final result.

04: Candidate A declared winner over Candidate B

There are going to be lots of results threads, and it will be difficult for the moderators to police all of them. If someone tries to disrupt, please hit alert on their post to let the moderators know. If this thread goes off topic, feel free to give others a polite reminder about the purpose of this thread.

1. 2nd district CT - good guy trails 58%-41% with 6% reporting
No idea where has reported, just saw the numbers. This is Jim Sullivan (D) challenging Rob Simmons.

5. I didn't expect Shays to go down
I don't know Fairfield County well enough to say much more than that, but I think I recognize an entrenched politician when I see one.

I don't know what happened here in #2. But it wasn't even close.

Was the idea of Sullivan/Simmons being a contest just a mirage? Were the pollsters making it up, or incompetent? Did too many people just stay home? (It was a pretty nice day here in the southeastern corner.)

Or did thousands of people wonder if Sullivan could really keep the sub base here?

7. huge last minute negative ads from Simmons
I think that swung it. I drove home and listened to WTIC AM on Monday night and it was almost constant anti-Sullivan ads - first from Simmons, then the RNC, then the NRA...even heard them back-to-back a few times.

despite what people always say to the contrary, negative ads work!

8. Not something that showed up in the last-minute polls
You could be right. On the print media side, we got bombarded with big glossy negative flyers, and we got one (1) postcard from Sullivan. He might have skipped our town, but it was still fairly anemic. And I didn't think money was that big of a problem.

Until the last day, though, the Day showed Sullivan within hootin' distance. So I don't know if the negative advertising started working at the very end, or if a lot of people suddenly got worried about EB and the sub base and needed Simmons representing us (to a party and a President that wishes we would all die). Or if the pollsters were screwed up all along.

At any rate, it was a disappointing denouement.

6. It's not as bad as it seems
Shays is a good guy. In fact, I voted for him. Farrell's campaign spread stuff about him being "in DeLay's pocket," but it's not at all true.

He's a moderate, with a mind of his own. He voted against impeaching Clinton and has broken with his party on many issues.

He's also done a lot for Connecticut. He's great on the environment and saved Long Island Sound.

Shays will continue to do a lot for Connecticut. If Farrell had won, she would have had no influence, especially with such a heavily Republican Congress.

She's the First Selectman of Westport and extremely popular. She's beautiful and charming and is great at schmoozing up people. But I never felt there was anything below the surface. She's more style than substance.
