NEW LONDON -- Democratic congressional hopefuls James Sullivan of Norwich and Shaun McNally will debate foreign policy issues Friday in the only face-to-face showdown between the two before Monday's Democratic 2nd District convention.
The debate, which is open to the public, will be held from 6-7 p.m. in the Ernst Common Room at the Blaustein Humanity Center at Connecticut College. The two Democrats are vying for the right to challenge two-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District, in November.
"Both campaigns obviously want to talk about their own issues, but my thought was that Iraq is an issue that everyone is interested in," said Merrick Alpert from the Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century, one of the two sponsors of the debate.
"Rob Simmons has many opportunities where he can talk about foreign policy issues," Alpert said, "but neither of these candidates have that same opportunity or forum. So we wanted to be put together a forum where they can discuss these issues."
