Delaware oil refiner pleads guilty to discharging pollutants into river

March 18 -- A Delaware oil refiner and retail business admitted to discharging pollutants into the Delaware River and negligently releasing sulfuric acid and will pay a $10 million fine, the state´s largest criminal fine.
Motiva Enterprises LLC, which is owned by Shell Oil Co. and Saudi Refining Inc., pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, the U.S. Department of Justice said March 17. Judge Sue L. Robinson sentenced the company to pay a $10 million fine.

In July 2001, a 415,000-gallon tank at the company´s Delaware City, Del., refinery exploded, spilling spent sulfuric acid into the river. The accident also killed one worker and injured several others.

1. Under bush's law can't they just trade "credits"
with someone who didn't spill anything in the river?

4. Motiva problems, deception and gross negligence have a LONG history
This stuff has been going on for many years now with all the accusations, denials and government deals that accompany big chemical companies:

2. I wouldn't piss in the Delaware River
for fear that something would work its way up the urine stream and into my body

3. That statement is made sadder by my and my family's history here.
Although I now live in a Hockessin condo, my great-grandparents, grandparents and both parents came from Old New Castle. And while I spent many a summer's weekend at Battery Park, playing along the river, even I remember that no one was allowed to swim there then.

My mother and grandmother had other stories about summer life near the river (their first house was on The Strand and had a wonderful river view) of swimming and fishing and boating. I remember the envy I felt at listening to those stories and I'm pretty sure the sadness played a great part in my own environmentalist activities.

For a (very short) while, the river did become cleaner but it didn't last long as more and more chemical companies moved to our area. Motiva was the unbelievably bad act of negligence here. Add to that the latest oil spill and the fighting over the liquid gas terminal and nerve gas distillation by DuPont and I have to agree.

Delaware has pretty much killed it's own river.

Still, that's only a small part of the intro to the big story of what corporations will do to the entire country, in the name of "better living through chemistry" -- and now, thanks to offshore factories without pollution controls -- ON to the rest of the globe!

Sorry. Just having some really bad days regarding humans lately.

PJ
