BofA quietly sheds 26% of Del. work force
Job cuts boost DuPont Co. to No. 1 private employer

Bank of America, which has steadfastly refused to say how many Delaware jobs it cut since acquiring MBNA credit card bank, has eliminated more than 3,100 jobs, or 26.5 percent of its state work force, since January 2006, according to the latest state data.

As a result, the DuPont Co., the state's 205-year-old corporate giant, is back on top as the largest private employer. Bank of America fell to No. 2.

The Delaware Department of Labor recently posted without comment the list of the state's biggest private employers on its Web site. It listed Bank of America as having 8,591 jobs, down from 11,700 as of January 2006. That total included MBNA and Bank of America employees in Delaware at the time of the merger.

Top state officials have repeatedly refused to say how many people the bank employed in recent months and have limited communications with the Department of Labor to one spokesman.
