In 2006 I just didn't even bother campaigning for anyone in Delaware. We were stuck with Carper as our senator and there were more critical races right over the boarder in Pennsylvania.
There are 2 very critical committees than can both help and hurt the progressive cause and that's the Judiciary and Foreign Affairs. Biden is on both and has been quite affective. Dem leaders I think know better than to put a DLCer on either of those but especially on the Judicary committee. People panicked about Bob Casey Jr, who is admittedly pro-life, running for US senate. I mean geez, this was our best hope to get rid of Rick Santorum and people still were upset he was running. I figured as long as Casey, who has anti-choice ways but nowhere near as harsh as Santorum, wasn't on the Judicary committee he couldn't hurt us.
Oddly enough, Casey has been one of the more progressive dems in DC these past 2 years.
If Delaware had a viable candidate to run against Carper I would be out there 100% supporting the guy. Unfortunately I think Carper would do a Lieberman and run independantly if he lost the primaries. There are no viable state-wide republicans other than Castle (who would never run against Biden or Carper) so Carper knows he could win easily with all-party election.
And as for getting a liberal on the court - well if we keep the Judicary filled with liberals (I think Feinstein is the worst - the rest are pretty safe bets) then we wouldn't have to worry about how the floor vote would go. What we need to do is keep these wack job judges from ever getting out of committee. Of course if we had a Democrat in the White House, even if it was Hillary the more moderate of the two, we would probably get a much better selection of judges to consider in committee.
