I wanted to give you the latest on an ongoing battle we've been fighting in Florida to preserve religious freedom and ask you to join us by taking action today.
Several weeks ago, we wrote you about a right-wing attack on the separation of church and state in Florida. Well, the provisions we warned you about that would strip an important clause from the Florida Constitution will be voted on tomorrow by the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission.
Now, please call the Commission office and tell the Commission to vote NO on Proposal 20 and Proposal 40, both of which would place on November's ballot an initiative that would weaken the protection of religious liberty in Florida.
(850) 921-8905
The FL Constitution protects religious liberty by expressly prohibiting the use of public funds in aid of "any church, sect or religious denomination or in aid of any sectarian institution." That's the clause the right wing is trying to eliminate.
Doing so would open up the state constitutional door for all kinds of harm -- expanded school voucher programs, government-funded discrimination in hiring and the provision of services, government-funded proselytizing, and much more.
The Taxation and Budget Reform Commission is only formed once every 20 years, to study Florida's tax code. They should stick to that job and leave the State Constitution intact.
Then, please forward this e-mail and ask your friends to weigh in too, either by calling or by e-mailing at
