Five years ago today: Hurricane Charley hits Florida..

The summer of 2004 visited 4 hurricanes and 2 tropical storms on Florida - here in Orlando we had 3 hurricanes strike within 6 weeks - Category 4 storm Charley, and Category 2 storms Frances and Jeanne - with Charley being the most direct and damaging.

In 16 days it will offically be 4 years since Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans - at one time a Category 5 storm and one the largest and most powerful in recorded history resulting in the deaths of over 1800 Americans in the Gulf Coast and also a few deaths in South Florida.

Right now the Hurricane Season is starting to crank into high gear and we may soon see our first Atlantic hurricane in the next 48 hours forming in the Eastern Atlantic.

We are having a slow season this year due to El Nino but don't forget these storms of 2004-2005 folks, be prepared anyways, get Red Cross training and show any hurricane the great respect it is due - they can and do kill. Even a slow season can produce a massive killer storm - Category 5 Andrew occurred in 1992 in an otherwise slow season hitting and devastating South Florida.
